History : The Department of Biochemistry was first founded in 1994 as the first chairman, Assistant Professor Zeki Arı. In 1994, the biochemistry laboratory was located in Block A ground floor of Morris Şinasi Building.

The Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry is awarded to 7 students and according to the Turkish University System of medical doctors 18 assistant doctors were awarded as experts in Biochemistry in the field of Medicine.
Currently 6 medical doctors are still in training as assistant doctors in our department.
Our academic staff are giving lectures in the first, second and third year medical school students and are also giving lectures to students of the institute of medical sciences.

Specific Admission Requirements : In order to be able to enroll in this program, candidates must take at least 55 points from the numerical score of the Academic Postgraduate Placement Examination (ALES) conducted centrally by the Measurement Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). The principles for accepting foreign students are determined by the Senate.

In order to be successful in the foreign language, candidates must take at least 40 points from YDS or equivalent points from any of the foreign language exams validated by the Inter-University Council. Those who apply to the programs for which the preparatory class is required for graduate education and those who succeed in the preparatory class in undergraduate education are not required.

In the master's program entrance exam, the grade of achievement must be at least 65 points. The success grade is the sum of 50% of the relevant ALES score, 30% of the undergraduate achievement grade and 20% of the interview grade. Success scores of students who do not enter the interview are not calculated.

Candidates whose achievement score is 65 or higher in the master's program are ranked according to their scores starting from the highest. Candidates in the quota receive a definitive registration for the programs they apply to.

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal) : Students enrolled in the department may request to be exempted from the courses they have achieved in equivalent programs of higher education institutions that they have studied previously. To do this, they must submit the approved transcript and course content to the relevant unit within one week after the registration week with a petition.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations : To be successful in at least eight courses, one seminar course and thesis study with a total of twenty-four (24) credits, to complete at least 120 ECTS credits in a maximum of six semesters, including not less than 60 ECTS credits in a school year, including seminar courses and thesis studies.
Profile of The Programme : The mission of the Medical Biochemistry program is to prepare professionals that will practice their profession with the firm purpose to advance basic and applied knowledge in the field of Biochemistry, through their professional and scholarly activities contributing in better understanding the field of biochemistry techniques,metabolisms and some clinical biochemistry. We aim to provide teaching in the subject area that is broad based, intellectually coherent and multidisciplinary; that builds on skills and knowledge acquired previously within the program and is informed by a research base of international standard. The Master of Science (MSc) is a two-year degree which encompasses both coursework and research. The first year involves mainly coursework and preliminary research preparation. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to existing fields of biochemistry.

Access to Further Studies : Graduates who successfully completed the Master's Degree may apply to doctorate (third cycle) programmes in the same or in related disciplines.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading : Exams consist of midterm, final and makeup exams. Other than the exams quizzes, projects, homeworks and other activities that the instructor deems appropriate can be carried out. The number of these activities and the contribution to the course grades are stated in the course plan by the teaching staff. Examinations can be done in written, oral, written and oral or practical. All exams are evaluated over 100 points and converted to letter grades by the system. Success grade is calculated by taking the percentages of midterm exams and other activities determined by the instructor provided that it exceeds 50% of the contribution of the final exam. The student must receive at least a CC letter grade in a lesson to be successful.
Graduation Requirements : To be successful in the Master's program student must take a minimum of totally 24 credits in at least eight courses, one seminar course and thesis study And must complete at least 120 ECTS credits in maximum six semesters, including not less than 60 ECTS credits in a school year, including seminar courses and thesis work.

Facilities : Our department is working in the clinical laboratory medical field of biochemistry other than the educational field. We have 2 laboratories in two different buildings. Our laboratories in Uncubozköy campus are clinical biochemistry laboratories and our second laboratory is for research purposes. We are using the newest technology and educated technical personnel to perform about 200 different tests. We also work in research and thesis projects. Since the beginning we have been using the inner and outer quality tests to asses our laboratory test performance. We are planning to apply to get 15189 quality certificates when we finish the paperwork needed.
